It's Q3 already -here's how to stay on track

It’s offcially the second half of the year, so let me start by saying welcome to Q3. Now, to my question for you, how many boxes have you ticked so far?

I am talking about the business goals you set at the beginning of the year. It has been six months, so it’s not too early to ask how many of those boxes you have ticked so far.

One of the things I have come to realise is that as the year unfolds and we settle into work mode after all the holidays, we quickly forget those things we have highlighted to achieve with the year. But this is not entirely about indiscipline, every new year comes with its challenges, and it's not always easy to keep up. That is why today, I have decided to share how to keep your goals in sight and work towards them as you continue your year.

Have a quarterly review: this helps you measure how much you have done and how much is left to do within a reasonable time frame. It also affords you the luxury of individual or team review, which helps track productivity as the year continues. Imagine waiting the entire year before you discover a department has been slacking.

Make an actual list: I know you have a comprehensive plan for the year saved as a pdf or printed out and neatly filed. But it also helps to make a list. Yes, write a list you can read at a go.

Have it in plain sight: losing sight of the goals is a common problem, so here is the antidote -keep it where you can easily reach it; keep it where you can easily see it. It helps keep the goals fresh in mind, and any time you see it, your mind can do a quick review. It can also provide a renewed motivation.

Prioritize your goals: outline the goals in their order of relevance and impact on the business, and most importantly, execute them in that order. This way, you don't major in the minor and spend your best time on the minor things.

Assign executors for each goal: I cannot emphasize this enough; the chance of something getting done doubles when someone is accountable for it. When they know they have to answer for it, they make sure everyone plays their part.

Create a reward system: it serves as a reminder of what needs to be done. It motivates; it creates healthy competition and helps you stay on track. Chances are, you will exhaust your list.

Tick the boxes: yes, take time to sit down and tick your boxes. Yes, pick up your pen and tick the box when it is done.

Finally...

Take a look at your goals today; if you haven't ticked any boxes yet or as much as you should have, the good news is there are still six months left this year, and it’s not too late to do a Q2 review.
